Do calves do better drinking from a bottle than a pail?

From personal experience I find they do better on the bottle. But either way it doesn't affect their growth dramatically.

have to agree my calves do a lot better on the nipple pails than when i tried just letting them drink from a pail. really noticed a dif in summer with lots of flies around calves picked up scours lot easier from the pails ,cause i always rinse the bottles after feeding, lot harder to do with the feeders. they also seemed lot nicer after weaning ,not as long haired and pot bellied. my vet claims the saliva from sucking helps with digestion, makes sense to me. hope this helps.jeremy

I find that feeding calves with a bottle is better. They grow better and when they eat lots of calf starter then I put them on the pail. For me I usually put them on the pail around 2 months of age.
I use bottle holder for my calves that why I can have the calves on the bottle for a long time

Calves will do better when milk is fed from a bottle and water is drank from a pail. The reason behind this is that when the calf drinks the esophogeal grove elongates letting the milk pass into the abomasum( true stomach) instead of the rumen. When water is fed you want to wait about 5 minute after feeding milk from a bottle so that the water goes into the rumen --this will help the rumen develop a a faster rate so that all the dry feed is digested properly though a mature system which leads to more growth long term not just at the time of weaning.
